Illuminating the reality of worldwide access to information, this expanded three-volume set is a one-stop resource for history, biography, and analysis of the Internet. Many communications technologies were originally pioneered as aids to people with disabilities. The earliest official use of the term 'computer hacker' emerged in the 1960s. The first e-mail was sent in 1971. The internet has revolutionized our world-without leaving home we can communicate with people in foreign countries, pay bills, even have groceries delivered! Find out how it all began. The first version of this reference won the RUSA Award for Outstanding Reference Source in 2000. Now expanded to three volumes, the new edition includes a fully revised and extended chronology volume, another of biographies, and a third of articles analyzing key Internet issues. The set also offers many fascinating tidbits about the Internet, including the fact that the phrase "surfing the internet" was coined in 1992 by librarian Jean Armour Polly in an article in the Wilson Library Bulletin. This set covers the earliest roots of the Internet, including events dating as far back as the 1800s and the invention of the telephone all the way to the founding of news agencies, the first steps toward digital computing, and the development of computing technology, telecommunications, and media. This work will be of interest to students of mass media, gender, business, and social history as well as technology....

The Eye of the Storm: How John Chambers Steered Cisco Through the Technology Collapse offers the gripping account of the high-tech American dream turned nightmare. Bestselling author Robert Slater's riveting narrative traces the path of Cisco's rise from anonymity to prosperity and then to its sudden, shocking fall, as a world without ceilings gave way to a world where no floor was in sight. Through unprecedented exclusive interviews with Chambers and Cisco's top executives and unparalleled access to Cisco's private forums, Slater reveals the confidential working and insider decisions behind what was nothing short of a business miracle before the vision went temporarily awry. Throughout this engaging tale of the birth and death of the new economy, Slater gleans pearls of business wisdom and essential lessons for corporate decision-making in the new millennium. Collected here are the brilliant maneuvers that catapulted Cisco to glory and the devastating mistakes that brought the company low. IBM Redux: Lou Gerstner and the Business Turnaround of the Decade
Authors: Doug Garr. Hardcover, 384 pagesPublisher: Collins Publication Date: 1999-09-01 Reviews :

When Lou Gerstner took the helm at IBM in 1993, the company was near to death. Big Blue lost $8 billion that year, capping a three-year loss of $16 billion. The business world had changed and it had failed to adapt, drowning in bureaucracy and its insular view of the business world. Six years on IBM is thriving again, and the stock is at an all-time high. Here is an in-depth look at IBM's recovery and the man who is leading it, Lou Gerstner. Author, Doug Garr, chronicles Gerstner's rise, his arrival as the first steward from outside the company's ranks, and his implementation of new strategies. Drawing on more than 150 interviews and hundreds of documents, Garr paints an enthralling portrait of the unlikely transformation of the dying mainframe company into an increasingly nimble information services giant. Along the way he reveals who this extraordinary, sometimes difficult, man is....

Lou Gerstner, the man who flipped IBM's fortunes, has what a former colleague calls "a vertical vision of reality." That is, if things aren't moving upward, he's very unhappy. When he took over at IBM in 1993, they were moving downward at a frightening speed, and what he did to turn the company around will probably be studied in business schools in future generations. Until then, we have IBM Redux, by Doug Carr, a very entertaining and instructive look at Gerstner and the company he revived. Carr, a former IBM speechwriter, possesses an insider's knowledge about the Gerstner years at IBM: the despair of watching the company sink into the tar pits of ever-deeper red ink; the ruthlessness of the early firings and other cost controls (one woman was downsized--"excessed" is the actual IBM euphemism--when she was eight and a half months pregnant and coming off a stellar performance review; another was given his termination papers while in a coma); the business decisions that led to the turnaround; and finally the elation of seeing the company reinvented as a nimble information-services provider. This is far from a hagiography of Gerstner, however. Because Carr didn't have access to him, he relies on anecdotes from those who know Gerstner and have worked with him, and the result is a fascinating portrait of the CEO as a young man (one former high school football teammate recalls an errant pass from quarterback Gerstner that led to the teammate's career-ending knee injury); as a man in a hurry (the chapters on Gerstner's years at American Express and RJR Nabisco foreshadow his accomplishments at IBM); and finally as a seasoned businessman who succeeded in overhauling a company that few thought would survive intact. --Lou Schuler...

Hacker Cracker: A Journey from the Mean Streets of Brooklyn to the Frontiers of Cyberspace
Authors: David Chanoff. Ejovi Nuwere. Hardcover, 272 pagesPublisher: William Morrow Publication Date: 2002-10-01 Edition: 1st Reviews :

One of the most gripping yet improbable stories spawned by the computer revolution, Hacker Crocker is a classic American-dream success story set on the razor edge of high technology. Ejovi Nuwere takes the reader on the roller-coaster ride of his extraordinary life, from the bullet-riddled, drugged-out streets of one of America's most notorious ghettos to a virtual world where identities shift and paranoia rules, where black-hat hackers and white-hat sleuths confront each other by day and switch roles at night in the ongoing war to control America's most sensitive computer systems. It is a story of an African American boy coming of age in the new millennium, a story that vibrates with the themes of American life, those we know and those we are just beginning to glimpse. Like other neighborhood kids in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, Ejovi Nuwere grew up among thugs and drug dealers. When he was eleven, he helped form a gang; when he was twelve, oppressed by the violence around him, he attempted suicide. In his large, extended family, one uncle was a career criminal, one a graduate student with his own computer. By the time Ejovi was fourteen, he was spending as much time on the computer as his uncle in college was. Within a year he was well on his way to a hacking career that would lead him to one of the most audacious and potentially dangerous computer break-ins of all time, secret until now. Along the way, Ejovi found time to become a kickboxing champion and an aspiring actor. Before he finished high school he was combining these pursuits with his hidden life in the hacker underground and an increasingly prominent career as a computer security consultant. At the age of twenty-two he was a top security specialist for one of the world's largest financial houses when his life was forever altered in the cataclysm of September 11, 2001. Hacker Cracker is at once the most candid revelation to date of the dark secrets of cyberspace and the simple, unaffected story of an inner-city child's triumph over shattering odds to achieve unparalleled success. This riveting autobiography is a Horatio Alger tale for our times: a thrilling, frightening, and ultimately uplifting story of survival and accomplishment....
