Software Pioneers
Authors:
Hardcover, 728 pages
Publisher: Springer
Publication Date: 2002-08-15
Edition: 1

Reviews :

This book, coming with four DVDs, presents epochal works of 16 of the most influential software pioneers. Seminal historical papers, going back as far as to the 1950s, are complemented by new papers especially written by the software pioneers for inclusion in this book and by short biographical notes. The volume is based on a conference where the pioneers met and presented their assessment of the past, new ideas, and visions for the future. The volume editors coherently integrated the historical contributions with current aspects and future perspectives. The four DVDs included are an important supplement to the book providing more than 12 hours of video documentation. Besides a representative overview drawing together the highlights of the presentations, the video recording of each pioneer's talk together with the transparencies used is included. Together, the book and the four DVDs constitute a unique and major contribution to the history of software engineering....

Global Alliances in the Motor Vehicle Industry
Authors: Leslie S. Hiraoka.
Hardcover, 240 pages
Publisher: Quorum Books
Publication Date: 2000-10-30

Reviews :

The globalization of the motor vehicle industry--specifically, cars and light trucks--has engendered new forms of competition and cooperation with less regard for national boundaries than ever before. The DaimlerChrysler merger, the GM-Toyota joint venture, the Renault equity stake in Nissan, the Ford takeover of Mazda, Jaguar, and Volvo cars, and direct foreign investments in Mexico, Mercosur (Mercado Comun del Sur), China, and India--developments like these are almost impossible to keep up with. Hiraoka, a prize-winning analyst of manufacturing excellence in the automotive industry, surveys them and their causes and presents a clarifying picture with thoroughness and depth. Hiraoka's explanation of the various factors contributing to globalization of the motor vehicle industry provides the background information necessary to gain perspective on recent events. These developments include e-commerce networks, alliances with local and far-flung parts suppliers, low-cost mass production and distribution systems, the launching of hybrid products in mature economies, and the buildup of capacity in emerging markets. His analysis ranges widely, delving into managerial reactions to regional free-trade blocks, currency crises, government shifts away from central planning and trade protectionism, the vicissitudes of business cycles in emerging markets, and the juxtaposition of Japan's prolonged recession and the booming American motor vehicle market. Corporate decision-makers, labor leaders, policy analysts, researchers, students, and industry observers will benefit from understanding the global characteristics of today's motor vehicle industry....

Reviews :

Between Friends is a unique contemporary correspondence between two women determined to age ungracefully -- an unplugged! -- in an email and virtuality-besotted world. In this low-fi pen-to-paper conversation, they discuss feminism, politics, current events and family issues, lending the reader an intimate glimpse of what it means to be alive today, what it means to grow and grow old, what it means to be a woman and -- most important -- what it means to be a true friend....

Characters of the Information and Communication Industry
Authors: Richard F. Bellaver.
Paperback, 396 pages
Publisher: AuthorHouse
Publication Date: 2006-09-15

Reviews :

I teach a graduate course called the History and Culture of the Information and Communications Industry. This book is a result of that course. It shows how the world has moved from primitive means of communication to the integrated multi-media situation we are in today. Its concentration is on the fields of journalism, telecommunications, broadcasting, and computing. Emphasis is placed on the leaders of the areas of interest and the political and cultural surroundings that encouraged or discouraged growth of the industry. One of the leaders mentioned is that lucky fellow Johann Gutenberg. Gutenberg certainly built a press that used movable type, but he became famous because of an early confluence of technology. At the time of his work good cheap paper became available from Italy, and longer lasting inks were developed in India. The technology of printing took off because quality and economy came together. We also are lucky that we know so much about Gutenberg because the Germans had such a good legal record keeping system in the sixteenth century and Mr. G. had so many run-ins with the law. Four hundred years later the confluence of satellite broadcasting and color printing techniques enabled another printing leader, Allen Neuharth, to produce a national newspaper called USA Today. This book mentions several lucky incidents or "what ifs" in the computer industry. For example, where would Microsoft be if Gary Kildall of Digital Research Corp. hadn't taken off to fly his airplane when the IBMers came to invite him to build the operating system for their new PC? Or before that, what if Charles Ramlett Flint had reconsidered hiring a convicted felon to run the Computing-Tabulating Recording Company when he brought on Thomas Watson Sr. who turned it into IBM? Or before that, what if Charles Babbage had and the money and the machinery to do the fine grinding work on the Analytical Engine. Politics, especially represented by the US Government, have...
