The Bitter Sea: Coming of Age in a China Before Mao
Authors: Charles N. Li.

A haunting and illuminating true story of growing up in the turbulent early years of modern China

In this exceptional memoir, Charles N. Li brings into focus the growth pains of a nation undergoing torturous rebirth and offers an intimate understanding of the intricate, subtle, and yet all-powerful traditions that bind the Chinese family.

Born near the beginning of World War II, Li Na was the youngest son of a wealthy Chinese government official. By the time he was twenty-one, he had witnessed enough hardship, hope, and tremendous change to last a lifetime. Li saw his family's fortunes dashed when Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists came to power in 1945, transforming his father from a powerful official to a prisoner jailed for treason. He survived a year in a dangerous Nanjing slum and watched from his aunt's Shanghai apartment as the Communist army marched in and seized the city in 1948. He experienced both the heady materialism of the decadent foreign "white ghosts" in British Hong Kong and the crippling starvation within the harsh confines of a Communist reform school. He went from being Li Na—the dutiful Chinese son yearning for a harsh, manipulative father's love—to Charles, an independent Chinese American seeking no one's approval but his own.

Lyrical and luminous, intense and extraordinary, The Bitter Sea is an unforgettable tale of one young man and his country.

The Swifts: Printers in the Age of Typesetting Races
Authors: Walker Rumble.
Hardcover, 233 pages
Publisher: University of Virginia Press
Publication Date: 2003-04

Reviews :

On a December day in 1885, Bill Barnes, a journeyman from the New York World, and Joe McCann, representing the New York Herald, faced off in a match race of Swifts, compositors who set type by hand, individually, letter by letter, with incredible accuracy and speed. McCann got off to a slow start, but at the end of the four-hour race, he joined shopfloor legends Clinton "The Kid" DeJarnatt and the "Velocipede" George Arensberg as a working-class hero. It was not the last race of its kind between Swifts, but already looming were changes both social and technological that would cause these gifted tramp printers to disappear. In The Swifts, Walker Rumble, himself a printer and printing historian, follows the trail of these colorful compositors who became famous by winning typesetting races. Tellingly, at the same time that the most celebrated contests were taking place, technological and cultural forces were threatening the Swifts' way of life. First, women printers vied for shopfloor legitimacy; then, in the mid-1880s, typesetting machines such as Mergenthaler's Linotype arrived, replacing the artisans forever. With the spread of digital technologies at the beginning of the twenty-first century, we are experiencing a revolution in printing matched only by two previous events: Gutenberg's fifteenth-century invention of movable type and the advent of typesetting machines that replaced the Swifts. Joining narrative historians of technology such as Robert Darnton, Henry Petroski, Dava Sobel, and Ross King, Rumble tells a fascinating story that will entertain aficionados of print culture while explaining the larger cultural dislocations wrought by technological change....

Reviews :

This brief text assists students in understanding Turing's philosophy and thinking so they can more fully engage in useful, intelligent class dialogue and improve their understanding of course content. Part of the Wadsworth Notes Series, (which will eventually consist of approximately 100 titles, each focusing on a single "thinker" from ancient times to the present), ON TURING is written by a philosopher deeply versed in the philosophy of this key thinker. Like other books in the series, this concise book offers sufficient insight into the thinking of a notable philosopher, better enabling students to engage in reading and to discuss the material in class and on paper....

Heart-Cry
Authors: Arlita Morken Winston.
Paperback, 276 pages
Publisher: Trafford Publishing
Publication Date: 2007-11-20

Reviews :

Does God's heart cry out for cannibals? For that matter, does God's heart cry for suicide bombers or terrorists? Is the Christian message of God's love as valid today as it was in the past, or is it old and ineffective news?

Arlita Winston lived in the jungles of Sumatra, the child of missionaries David and Helen Morken. Decades later, she looks back and tells how her parents, aunt and uncle braved wild panthers and pythons, head-hunters, hardship and even death to bring God's love to the native people there. Heart-Cry is that story, but it is more than a missionary biography. In the remarkable story of the life of this one family and those they touch is a living picture of the way God pursues all people, of whatever race or creed. He pursues those who love Him and those who do not; He pursues the missionaries and the cannibals alike; and His faithfulness and divine preparation and intervention can be seen in the lives of each. In God's workings in their lives, the author finds timeless truths about God and faith that apply today as much as they did then.

Today after 49 years of marriage, 5 children and 28 grandchildren, Arlita finds she is living in a world no more secure than when she was growing up. She is convinced of God's goodness which turns the worst experiences into good when we cooperate with Him. Heart-Cry is for every heart-sick child who has never been presented with the cry of God's love. It will resonate with children of ministers and missionaries and with anyone who suffered hardships in childhood and who yearns for a perfect Father. Heart-Cry offers insight, inspiration, and healing for God's children who have experienced unresolved conflict and suffering in service for Him....
