Teach Yourself Computers and the Internet Visually
Authors: Ruth Maran.
Paperback, 285 pages
Publisher: Wiley Publishing
Publication Date: 1998-10-15
Edition: 2nd

Reviews :

An updated edition of this handbook on computers and the Internet. It covers Windows 98, and has been designed to make specific information easier to find and retain. It also addresses topics such as surfing the Web, using e-mail, developing mailing lists, joining newsgroups and subscribing to "push services". There are step-by-step instructions and screen shots....

The creators of Teach Yourself Computers and the Internet Visually have done a service for the "people who know about computers" of the world. With lots of colorful pictures and just enough lucid prose, this book answers many of the questions computer newcomers traditionally have asked their coworkers or children.

Covering everything from how to click with a mouse to how to connect to an FTP site, this book tells pretty much everything you need to know to become a competent computer user. The authors don't restrict their coverage to the basics, either--the book includes plenty of information on scanners, removable disks, digital cameras, and other accessories that aren't found on every computer.

One of the great things about this book is that it provides information that other publications often leave out. For instance, many introductory Internet books describe electronic mailing lists, but few make the point (as this one does) that lists usually have an administrative address separate from the distribution address. That's the kind of important information that will save newbies from awkward moments.

A few details are misleading, but the mistakes are minor. As a whole, Teach Yourself Computers and the Internet Visually is dead-on accurate and fun to read. --David Wall...

Plagiarism, the Internet and Student Learning: Improving Academic Integrity
Authors: Sutherland-Smit.
Paperback, 224 pages
Publisher: Routledge
Publication Date: 2008-04-25
Edition: 1

Reviews :

Written for Higher Education educators, managers and policy-makers, "Plagiarism, the Internet and Student Learning" combines theoretical understandings with a practical model of plagiarism and aims to explain why and how plagiarism developed. It offers a new way to conceptualize plagiarism and provides a framework for professionals dealing with plagiarism in higher education. Sutherland-Smith presents a model of plagiarism, called the plagiarism continuum, which usefully informs discussion and direction of plagiarism management in most educational settings. The model was developed from a cross-disciplinary examination of plagiarism with a particular focus on understanding how educators and students perceive and respond to issues of plagiarism. The evolution of plagiarism, from its birth in Law, to a global issue, poses challenges to international educators in diverse cultural settings. The case studies included are the voices of educators and students discussing the complexity of plagiarism in policy and practice, as well as the tensions between institutional and individual responses. A review of international studies plus qualitative empirical research on plagiarism, conducted in Australia between 2004-2006, explain why it has emerged as a major issue. The book examines current teaching approaches in light of issues surrounding plagiarism, particularly Internet plagiarism. The model affords insight into ways in which teaching and learning approaches can be enhanced to cope with the ever-changing face of plagiarism. This book challenges Higher Education educators, managers and policy-makers to examine their own beliefs and practices in managing the phenomenon of plagiarism in academic writing....

Webs of Power: Notes from the Global Uprising
Authors: Starhawk.
Paperback, 288 pages
Publisher: New Society Publishers
Publication Date: 2002-08-01

Reviews :

Writing from the front lines, Starhawk chronicles the global justice movement sparked by Seattle's 1999 anti-World Trade Organization protest. A life-long activist, Starhawk is deeply involved as a direct action participant and trainer in the antiglobalization movement.

The book is divided into "Actions" and "Visions." In Part I, Starhawk begins with an overview of the complex political and economic powers that the antiglobalization movement opposes. Then, recounting the blow-by-blow events of the critical confrontations faced by the antiglobalization protestors-from Seattle to Genoa-Starhawk discusses police brutality, the Black Bloc versus the pacifists, and the magic of solidarity.

In Part II, Starhawk spins a vision of the future of the antiglobalization movement. Drawing on her twenty years of experience as an activist, ecofeminist, and witch, she explores the debate between violent and nonviolent tactics; the definition of an economy of true abundance; and how we can transform our rage and despair, face our fears, and renew our spirits while acting to change the world.

Starhawk is the author or coauthor of eight books, including The Twelve Wild Swans: Journeys Into Magic, Healing and Action (HarperSanFrancisco, 2000); the Twentieth Anniversary Edition of The Spiral Dance (HarperSanFrancisco, 1999); and Circle Round: Raising Children in the Goddess Tradition (Bantam, 1998). Well-known in the Wiccan and Pagan Community, Starhawk is a columnist on the web for beliefnet.com and for znet. She lives in San Francisco.
