    Quicken 2000 for Macintosh: Visual QuickStart Guide does an excellent job of introducing the newcomer to computerized financial record-keeping for individuals. If you're thinking about making the leap from paper check registers and scattered credit card statements, this book can help you convert your records to digital form and develop a better picture of where you stand in terms of what you have, what you owe, and what you expect to happen in the future. This book is best for people who don't expect to strain Quicken's accounting capabilities. Its documentation of the program's mechanisms for tracking checking account transactions, loans, and credit card balances is very good, but investment coverage falls somewhat short of the mark. (There's nothing about recording the details of a stock split, for example.)

Still, the Visual QuickStart style works well as a tool for introducing novices to something potentially confusing with a minimum of pain. Small screen shots appear next to the column of text containing the steps to follow; you just need to glance back and forth to see how your computer's display should look as you progress. If you run Quicken 2000 on a Mac and want a gentle introduction to its essentials, this book has your number. --David Wall

    The little, round label on this book's cover says that over 40 million people don't mind being referred to as "dummies" since they've turned to this series to ease their technological burden. Personal insults aside, Microsoft Money 98 for Dummies does exactly what it promises: it provides a nonthreatening guidebook to the Microsoft Money 98 application. In addition to no-nonsense instruction throughout the application, the book describes how to use the software most effectively for inputting data, printing checks, and other common tasks. This reference also teaches more advanced features, such as how to manage your personal portfolio (or create one if you don't have one) or use Money 98 for a small business.

Most of the instruction here repackages information that is already in the program or in its documentation. It's grown considerably from its checkbook-register roots, and Macintosh users who want help getting the most from Quicken will appreciate the documentation Quicken 2000 for the Mac: The Official Guide provides.

This book consists largely of straight feature explanations--what to click when, what data to enter into which boxes, and what procedures to follow to achieve specific results. You'll find clear statements of how to account for specific events, such as stock splits and payments, to creditors. The book's coverage doesn't extend far beyond the standard uses of Quicken's features, though. You won't find anything about the tricks you can use to track the values of equity options with the program, for example.

On top of its software documentation, this book provides a personal-finance primer that explains such things as how to reverse home equity loans work and what fees to expect when closing on a mortgage. There's also some advice on reducing debt and saving for major expenses. The author provides paper worksheets in this section, along with some in-depth explanations of how to use Quicken's reporting features to gauge your monetary health. --David Wall
